Final year woven textiles students were selected to showcase their woven samples at Spinexpo as part of a live project with Sophie Steller. The students produced work for two of Sophie Steller’s clients Novetex and Biella.
About the Award:
Applications are invited for the Cockpit Arts / The Clothworkers Foundation Awards 2016. The Awards are only open to weavers who have graduated within the last 5 years.
The Awards aim to assist emerging weavers each year to set up in business by providing studio space and business support provided by Cockpit Arts as well as shared use of looms. The selection panel, including the acclaimed ikat weaver and designer Mary Restieaux, and a representative of The Clothworkers Foundation, will be looking for up to three individuals who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit as well as creative excellence and craft skills. The Award contributes to the cost of a place at Cockpit for one year from July 2016 and will include a space in a shared studio equipped with 3 looms, Leclerc and Louet, and the following benefits:

This is the last week to catch Refabricate, the current exhibition in the WSA Gallery exploring the relationships between textiles and art and featuring the work of Printed Textile student Sally Amberton. Her involvment in the show came about from conversations at the cross-disciplinary ‘Hookers Knitters and Stitchers’ Society of which Sally is president.
Stephen Walters are silk weavers designing and producing fabric for international luxury brands. They have built their reputation as design leaders working exclusively with fashion houses across the world. They are recruiting for the following position to join our highly regarded design team:
Entry Level Textile Designer to work within their creative design team producing CAD representations of their jacquard designs.
The design work is extremely varied and covers a broad range of fabrics from men’s neckwear to contemporary womenswear and furnishings.
They are looking for a designer with good artistic ability and drawing skills, a sensitivity to colour, a diversity of styles and attention to detail. An understanding of CAD systems would be beneficial but not essential, as full training will be given to the successful applicant.
Their design team is currently made up of trained designers from a variety of disciplines such as print, surface pattern and weave. They would like to hear from anyone who is qualified in similar areas.
Hours of work: 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday (40 hours)
Location: Sudbury, Suffolk
Salary: Depending on experience

Current second year WSA students on the Knitwear and Woven Textiles pathways had the opportunity to exhibit work at Spinexpo in Shanghai at the beginning of the this month. Two students were selected to go to Shanghai for the duration of the show, Hannah Brabon (Knitwear) and Emma Pedrick (Woven Textiles), who had the opportunity to meet industry experts, gain an insight into the industry as well as the workings of an international trade show.
Spinexpo and WSA worked together on a project brief where students had to develop concepts around the colour RED.
‘We asked students to be very experimental and broad with their approaches to this theme. The students had the privilege to work with the latest developments in yarns from the exhibitors of the show.” (Helga Matos)
Winchester School of Art and Nottingham Trent University are the only two education institutions that Spinexpo has chosen to promote. Spinexpo is a global yarn and trend show that takes place in Shanghai (twice a year), Paris and New York. Last week Sarah Macgregor, Design Director from Colefax and Fowler visited the exhibtion of wallpaper designed by Printed Textiles students and created in their second year. Melissa Ougham’s space inspired wallpaper caught Sarah Macgregor’s eye for it’s bold style and movement. Melissa won £200 and a selection of books. Congratulations!
A major retrospective at the Whitworth, Manchester opens 29th January – August 2016 of the pioneering post-war textile designer Tibor Reich, who brought modernity into British textiles.
In 2015 Tibor Reich’s Grandson, Sam Reich, began the huge task of reviving his Grandfathers company, Tibor Ltd. WSA and RCA alumni Hannah Auerbach has been working as head of woven textiles exploring and resurrecting Tibor’s vast archive of designs. The exhibition follows Reich’s complex and multifaceted career as a designer that spanned over four decades. A wide range of his designs, sketchbooks and artworks will be on display.

Megan Ferris, currently in her second year of studying Printed Textile Design has won a scarf competion with company Filthy Weather. Her ‘Welcome to Wonderland’ design will be produced as a limited edition silk scarf as well as receiving £400 as part of her prize.
Megan’s scarf design was inspired by the work of Hannah Hoch, the Tim Burton film and other artists such as Polly Morgan, Tim Walker and Ralph Steadman. The scarf focuses on the key characters from Alice in Wonderland, surrounded by famous quotes from the book and strange clocks. Colours were inspired by Salvador Dali’s illustrations using the contrast of bright and washed out shades. Elements of Megan’s own dreams also inspired some of the images in her design. The scarf celebrates the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland which takes place this year.
