WSA Woven Textiles goes to ‘Making it in Textiles’ 2015

Three final year Woven Textiles students, Leah Ashton, Hannah Mueller and Barbara Ahenkorah travelled to Bradford with tutor Jane Landau last week to take part in ‘Making it in Textiles’.

The Campaign for Wool, The Clothworkers’ Company, The Drapers’ Company and The Weavers’ Company have collaborated for a second year to provide a free, two-day conference in Bradford for final-year textile degree students, to forge stronger links between educational institutions and the UK textile manufacturing industry.

“We believe that textile students need more practical guidance about how the industry works. The conference will allow industry experts to provide insight into different roles within the industry, and to set out the requirements for employment after graduation. Students will also gain practical knowledge of a working mill through local mill trips.”

Mulberry are looking for an intern for the Color / Material / Print designer and Graphic designer with skills and qualities such as:

• Team player able to manage multiple tasks
• Responsible, hardworking and conscientious person who is able to manage their own time to complete tasks
• Organized – It is an amazing opportunity for the candidate to be exposed to how a design studio runs and the organization that is needed; they will play a key role in this. On a daily basis we need help visually updating collection information such as; mood boards, color cards, collection plans, sketches, simulations, researches.
• Fully trained on photoshop/illustrator/InDesign – The candidate will be required to carry out creative projects such as re-working prints/artworks/simulations developments etc. Technical drawings to send to suppliers, so illustrator skills need to be strong.

A previous experience in the fashion industry would be appreciated.

The weave department are really excited to announce the arrival of the new digital Controller for the Jacquard loom. The digital information will now by transmitted directly from the computer to the loom. Goodbye floppy disks!

Woven Textiles student Leah Ashton tells us about her summer internships

Final year Woven Textiles student, Leah Ashton, spent her summer at two exciting internships one with Anna Champeney in Northern Spain and the other with Christopher Farr Cloth in London. She tells us about her very different experiences at both learning about their design process and how each company is run.

Anna Champeney Textile Studio

“In June this summer I spent three weeks at Anna Champeney Textile Studio, learning about local weaving techniques and natural dyeing. AC Textiles is an independent studio based in the remote village of Cristosende, Northern Spain. I applied for the internship because I wanted to gain even more weaving experience; this internship allowed me to weave myself, which very few others gave me the opportunity to do.

During my internship I wove a linen scarf which was sold online as part of AC Textiles summer collection as well as some linen towels for a customer commission. I also learnt some techniques for dyeing using plants and other natural sources, many of which were grown locally on site; I found this a very interesting experience.

It was such a great opportunity to travel to Northern Spain and be able to weave with a freelance designer. Not only because of the textile knowledge that I gained but also because I got to learn about the culture of a remote Spanish village and how a designer markets herself in such an area.”

Christopher Farr Cloth

“My next internship was at Christopher Farr Cloth in Chelsea, London. I was there from the beginning of July to the end of August. Christopher Farr cloth is the fabric division of Christopher Farr (Rugs). Their collection has over 60 designs of prints and weaves, designed by a range of designers and artists. The printed collection is still produced in the UK, and I was lucky enough to visit the family-owned company and see how the designs were printed; both by hand and using a rotary.

My main role consisted of dealing with sample requests, whether that was sending sample refreshers to the showrooms abroad or to independent interiors designers. During my internship they were developing a new printed outdoor fabric line, I got to sit in on meetings with the international printers and work on colour ways for the new prints. Recently, Christopher Farr have brought out a new wallpaper collection. Each wallpaper comes in an assortment of colours and I helped to create a wallpaper colour collection book that allows clients to pick designs and colour ways.”

Fashion and Textile Design welcomes Rachel Reynolds to the team

Rachel Reynolds has joined the team as a Digital Textiles Technician. Rachel will provide technical support for Fashion and Textile Design students in Digital Mimaki Printing. She will also be delivering workshops and demonstrations to BA and MA students in fabric dyeing and CAD, alongside offering practical support in the use of specialist equipment.

Rachel gained an MA in textile design at WSA in 2012 and has over 10 years experience working as a freelance printed textile designer and artist. Commissions include large-scale printed textiles in Europe and Los Angeles, through to designs for bespoke stationery and homeware products. Rachel produces her own range of hand drawn and digitally printed interior products.

Knitwear Internship at Julien Macdonald

Julien Macdonald is a luxury women’s fashion brand famous for its red carpet dressing.

We are currently looking to fill knit internship positions for the S/S 16 show in February. We are looking for students with excellent knitting skills. You should have previous experience using domestic knitting machines; fully fashioning garments and be very competent and confident with a wide variety of stitches.

‘Liberty in Fashion’ at the Fashion and Textile Museum

Liberty has been at the cutting edge of design and the decorative arts since 1875. The exhibition explores Liberty’s impact on British fashion, from Orientalism and Aesthetic dress in the 19th century, through Art Nouveau and Art Deco in the early 20th century, and the revival of these styles since the 1950s. Liberty Art Fabrics and the textile design studio take centre stage as the internationally recognised leader in floral, paisley and patterned prints and dress fabrics.

Liberty in Fashion celebrates the 140th anniversary of the company. The exhibition charts Liberty’s history as ‘the’ fashionable place to shop as well as its role as the source and originator of key trends in fashion history. Over 150 garments, textiles and objects demonstrate Liberty’s strong relationships with designers since 1875, from Arthur Silver of Silver Studio to collaborations with Jean Muir, Cacharel, Yves Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood.

Exhibition Dates: 9 October 2015 – 28 February 2016

Louis Vuitton Series 3 Exhibition

London will be the destination for the unconventional exhibition “LOUIS VUITTON SERIES 3 – Past, Present, Future”.
A modern and unexpected reinterpretation of a fashion show, this exhibition, following on from SERIES 1 and SERIES 2, invites visitors to discover Nicolas Ghesquière’s inspirations for his fourth ready-to-wear show as the Artistic Director for women’s collections at Louis Vuitton.

The exhibition will be open to the public from September 21st to October 18th, 2015.

Alumni Success for Printed Textile graduate Jennifer Varty

Jennifer Varty graduated from WSA in Printed Textile Design in 2014. After studying with us she went on to a year long internship in New York with Collection 18 after being interviewed at New Designers. Collection 18 is fashion accessory company specializing in scarves for designer brands and private label collections.

Creative Director, Rachel Rowberry, was so impressed with Jennifer she has now been given a permanent role as Print Designer at the company.  She is now the primary
designer on the Saks and JCPenney accounts, for which she does the trend
research, design concepts and colouring, and work alongside members of the
sales team and buyers. She is currently preparing for Fall 2016 on the Collection 18 line, compiling trend and colour research for the new season, which she will have to present to the entire design team at our Fall Kick-Off meeting, before designing the collection.
