‘Liberty in Fashion’ at the Fashion and Textile Museum

“I was determined not to follow existing fashion but to create new ones.” Arthur Lasenby Liberty.

Liberty has been at the cutting edge of design and the decorative arts since 1875. The exhibition explores Liberty’s impact on British fashion, from Orientalism and Aesthetic dress in the 19th century, through Art Nouveau and Art Deco in the early 20th century, and the revival of these styles since the 1950s. Liberty Art Fabrics and the textile design studio take centre stage as the internationally recognised leader in floral, paisley and patterned prints and dress fabrics.

Liberty in Fashion celebrates the 140th anniversary of the company. The exhibition charts Liberty’s history as ‘the’ fashionable place to shop as well as its role as the source and originator of key trends in fashion history. Over 150 garments, textiles and objects demonstrate Liberty’s strong relationships with designers since 1875, from Arthur Silver of Silver Studio to collaborations with Jean Muir, Cacharel, Yves Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood.

Exhibition Dates: 9 October 2015 – 28 February 2016

Woven Textiles alumni Carys Whitehouse begins her MA at the RCA this week

Carys Whitehouse, who graduated this summer with a First Class Honours in Woven Textiles has started her Masters at the Royal College of Art this week.

Carys’ final collection, a combination of hand woven textiles, jacquards, digital prints and sculpture, reflected on how we express anxiety both consciously and unconsciously. This took the form of drawing and sculptures exploring her own anxieties as well as examining “medicine as a form of escapism from societal anxieties.” Her collection was developed using materials and processes which were entirely free from animal products for a gender-neutral fashion market.

Carmen started interning at Osborne & Little in March last year, initially her role involved assisting the different teams in the studio, including the designers, graphics and production, with general studio tasks such as sending selected deigns and colourways off to suppliers to be produced and helping send purchase orders. During her time interning Carmen also started designing for Osborne & Little and helping colour wallpaper designs. After interning for 3 months Carmen was offered a permanent design role.

She is currently working on the next collection collaborating with Matthew Williamson, launching in September 2016. She is still putting her drawing and painting skills to good use in developing designs, alongside CAD processes.

Congratulations Carmen!

Fashion Student Sophie Lever tells of her internship at By Walid

Sophie Lever, a Fashion Design student about to go into her 2nd year at WSA, has spent her summer interning at fashion label By Walid. Recent press in Mr Porter about By Walid mentions WSA as part of the intern team.

Sophie Lever describes her experience; “I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to carry out a month’s internship at By Walid in London during the summer. This internship was extremely beneficial, and I learnt so much during my time there. Some of the tasks that I carried out included copying patterns that were then sent to the factory for manufacturing, and undertaking quality control on the garments. I also completed hours of hand sewing and finishing ready for shipping.”

“By Walid’s garments are all made from beautiful recycled antique fabrics that can be extremely delicate, and therefore much care and attention is needed to ensure that they were suitable to be sent off to clients. It really opened my eyes as to how much work is put into each one-of-a-kind piece, I would often spend two full days working on the finishing of just one coat! However, the amount of care and time that went into each garment really showed and I think that is the key to the brands success.”

“When I was given a months internship I was aware my roles could have been general office duties, which I would have been happy to do. However, I considered it to be a real privilege to be trusted to actually work on the garments, and to feel like part of the team. It was so nice working with a group of extremely talented people and learning tips and gaining advice that will help me during my studies in the future.”

Tate Modern Exhibition – The World Goes Pop

17 September 2015 – 24 January 2016

worldgoespopbanner

Whaaam! Pop! Kapow! This is pop art, but not as you know it.

Tate Modern is ready to tell a global story of pop art, breaking new ground along the way, and revealing a different side to the artistic and cultural phenomenon.

From Latin America to Asia, and from Europe to the Middle East, this explosive exhibition connects the dots between art produced around the world during the 1960s and 1970s, showing how different cultures and countries responded to the movement.

Politics, the body, domestic revolution, consumption, public protest, and folk – all will be explored and laid bare in eye-popping Technicolor and across many media, from canvas to car bonnets and pinball machines.

The exhibition will reveal how pop was never just a celebration of western consumer culture, but was often a subversive international language of protest – a language that is more relevant today than ever.
