Julien Macdonald Knitwear Design Internship

Julien Macdonald is a luxury women’s fashion brand famous for its red carpet dressing.

We are currently looking to fill knit internship positions for the S/S 17 show from May to September 2016. We are looking for students with excellent knitting skills. You should have previous experience using domestic knitting machines; fully fashioning garments and be very competent and confident with a wide variety of stitches.

Essential Personal Skills
We are looking for an individual with the following personal skills and attributes:

  • Professional and enthusiastic attitude & approach;
  • Flexible and self-motivated approach with the ability to adapt to a changing environment;
  • Have the ability to operate effectively as part of a team as well as, where appropriate, on your own initiative;

Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos are two creative forces that have come together to form the Peter Pilotto fashion house. Pilotto is half-Austrian, half-Italian and De Vos is half-Belgian, half-Peruvian. Their fusion of cultures is reflected on their catwalk, in sensuous combinations of constructed and flowing: couture fabrics, form-enhancing cuts and intricately engineered prints are parts of the label’s enduring signature. Prize: The winner of the Wildcard Competition will receive a place alongside some of the world’s most renowned fashion designers, such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, at the Eastpak Artist Studio, with all the prestige and publicity that entails.

The winning design will be integrated in the project’s communication platform and exhibited at the international finissage around World Aids Day, December 1st 2016. The designer’s creation will be sold at auction and all proceeds donated to the charity organisation Designers Against Aids.

Each finalist will receive an Eastpak travel gear package valued at €300.

Participants must come up with an original design for transforming a blank Eastpak Padded Pak’r¼ backpack into a unique work of art.

Anything goes: you can redecorate, recover, reconstruct or even reinvent the bag, provided the Eastpak Artist Studio logo remains intact and visible.

Red is the Colour – WSA at Spinexpo, Shanghai

Current second year WSA students on the Knitwear and Woven Textiles pathways had the opportunity to exhibit work at Spinexpo in Shanghai at the beginning of the this month. Two students were selected to go to Shanghai for the duration of the show, Hannah Brabon (Knitwear) and Emma Pedrick (Woven Textiles), who had the opportunity to meet industry experts, gain an insight into the industry as well as the workings of an international trade show.

Spinexpo and WSA worked together on a project brief where students had to develop concepts around the colour RED.

‘We asked students to be very experimental and broad with their approaches to this theme. The students had the privilege to work with the latest developments in yarns from the exhibitors of the show.” (Helga Matos)

Winchester School of Art and Nottingham Trent University are the only two education institutions that Spinexpo has chosen to promote. Spinexpo is a global yarn and trend show that takes place in Shanghai (twice a year), Paris and New York. The RED project will now go to the Paris show on the 6th and 7th July 2016. http://www.spinexpo.com

Knitwear Designer role at Roland Mouret

As a result of continued growth at Roland Mouret and the development of the knitwear category within our collection, we are looking for an experienced, passionate, innovative and dedicated knitwear designer to join our team and work alongside the Creative Director and Knitwear Product Developer to produce an exciting and commercial knitwear collection.

We want to hear from someone with a real passion for knitwear who can push the boundaries and excite us with their designs while appreciating the Roland Mouret brand aesthetic.

Main duties will include:
-Ensure that the company brief for the brand is adhered to.
-Plan the range.
-Produce initial trend, range and pack concepts and colour boards.
-Produce key shapes for each product category.
-Working with the Knitwear Developer, source and match all trimmings, button linings etc. for initial samples.
-Review initial samples with the Creative Director and Collection Development team to assess styling issues prior to fitting.
-Communicate design ideas in a confident and enthusiastic manner.

We are looking for someone with the following skills/attributes/experience:
-Creative flair and innovation and a proactive approach to design.
-Commercial industry experience required since graduating, ideally with a luxury brand(s).
-Able to identify key trends, and interpret these in a relevant and commercial way for the customer.
-Must be able to work in a fast paced fashion environment.
-Excellent understanding of garment construction and in particular knitwear manufacturing methods.
-Able to work on their own – take initiative.
-Communication, interpersonal and influencing skills at all level.
-Strong organisational skills with the ability to work to deadlines is essential
-Target driven with a passion for fashion and the confidence to grow and develop.
-Ability to produce technical sheets for manufacturing products.
-Flexible with working hours including overtime and travel.
-Strong CAD skills and Illustrator experience.
-Creative and innovative with confidence to present ideas to others.
-Good presentation skills.
-Digital approach to working processes.

Channa Horwitz at Raven Row

Channa Horwitz (1932–2013, Los Angeles) was amongst the pioneers in the late 1960s and 70s of a distinctly Californian minimalism. She came relatively late to art, arranging it around her home life, and despite corresponding and swapping work with Sol LeWitt, she received little attention from the art world until the end of her life.

Horwitz claimed artistic freedom through confinement to a few simple rules. She came to base all her work on the numbers one to eight – often deploying a colour code for each number – and used this system to depict time and movement. Her outstanding series titled Sonakinatography can be understood in terms of notation, for instance for music or choreography.

Working mostly without the promise of exhibition, Horwitz was disciplined and prolific. Although she experimented with other materials – sculpture and photography, as well as performance and ultimately installation – her preferred form was drawing, often using ink on standard graph paper. At times during the exhibition Horwitz’s work will be activated through music, and dance, and movement workshops.

Every season, SHOWstudio commissions new artists and illustrators to interpret the collections of key designers in New York, London, Milan and Paris, in original artworks. Working with both acclaimed and emerging illustrators, SHOWstudio continually seeks to offer a platform for fashion illustrators to showcase their work.

Fashion illustrations have become a prominent component of SHOWstudio’s collections coverage, as well as featuring in projects such as Illustrating McQueen and A Beautiful Darkness.

Menswear Styling and Studio Internship

London based, Rose Forde is a Menswear Stylist & Consultant working across editorial, campaign & talent dressing. Rose Forde contributes to several international titles including L’UOMO Vogue, GQ, L’Officiel Hommes, Numero Homme as a Contributing Fashion Editor and also has a roster of high-profile actors and musicians for image management.
The studio is a busy environment and we are a small team so there are many opportunities to learn and grow.
This is an voluntary internship for someone who is looking for experience in this area of styling & fashion or has experience but wants the opportunity to work in smaller team so that greater responsibility on projects can be achieved.
The role will require dedication to each project and the ability to work well in a team.
Independent time keeping and a polite proactive attitude to each job.
Responsibilities will include:

  • editing looks
  • studio admin
  • creating fashion & mood boards
  • assisting on shoot days
Rose Forde runs a intern programme that runs for 6 weeks, candidates will be able to complete key tasks and leave with key skills for their CV. The studio team will advise and guide each intern and ensure that time given is valued and rewarded with experience that benefits further career goals. Each intern will leave with a review and points for CV completed by the studio team.

Hilma af Klint: Painting the Unseen at The Serpentine

Serpentine Galleries presents an exhibition of Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862–1944), who is now regarded as a pioneer of abstract art. While her paintings were not seen publicly until 1986, her work from the early 20th century pre-dates the first purely abstract paintings by Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich.

This Serpentine exhibition focuses primarily on af Klint’s body of work,The Paintings for the Temple, which dates from 1906–15. The sequential nature of her work is highlighted by the inclusion in the exhibition of numerous paintings from key series, some never-before exhibited in the UK.
