Pattern Cutting Internship at Saloni

Saloni is a luxury womenswear brand, encompassing feminine, playful and effortless elegance. They are designed for a woman who confidently embraces vivid prints and colour palettes while also appreciating the value of artisanal craft.

We are currently seeking a pattern cutting intern to assist the pattern cutting team in our London office. The ideal candidate will need to have pattern cutting experience and be passionate about pursuing this as a career. The chosen intern will need to be able to excel in a fast paced environment and have a good understanding of garment construction. You should also have an eye for detail and precision as accuracy is imperative.

We are looking for an individual who is reliable, enthusiastic and able to work independently as well as in a team.

Position is available immediately, with the duration of the placement being a minimum one month and a maximum six. Placement is unpaid, apart from travel costs which will be covered for zones 1-2 only. This is a great opportunity for a student or graduate to gain industry experience in a fast paced design studio.

Showroom Assistant at Osborne and Little

Osborne and Little is one of the world’s leading names in fabric and wallpaper design.

Main duties

The position is based at our King’s Road showroom and would predominantly be based around assisting customers and clients with their interior schemes and pushing forward the sales of Osborne and Little fabric and wallpaper as well as our other brands (Matthew Williamson, Nina Campbell and Lorca), furniture and accessories.
We’re looking for someone to be part of our small, friendly team, involved in a variety of duties including; retail sales, ordering, general administration as well as assisting trade and retail customers with design, colour and interiors advice face to face, by phone, letter and email.

Skills & Experience

The successful applicant would require excellent spoken and written communication skills, along with the ability to work well within a team at our busy interiors showroom, using their initiative when required. We are looking for someone who is reliable, bright, outgoing and well presented. Previous customer contact experience is essential. A background in design, furnishings or interiors, with some administration experience would be an advantage. Some Saturdays required.

Knitwear Production Assistant opportunity in London

CHELACHE is a small knitwear label based in Hackney, London.

We design, make and sell knitted fashion accessories for men and women. Everything is done in house, from design and sampling to production and finishing. At the moment we mainly retail our products direct to the public, via our website and at design markets and sales shows, but we are looking to develop the wholesale side of the business.

Main duties

Production of knitted accessories on Dubied flat bed knitting machines.
Assisting at design shows and sales shows (both retail and trade).

Skills & Experience

Interns will be expected to assist in potentially all areas of the business and so learning opportunities will be broad and varied. I’m always eager to share knowledge and can help interns to not only develop their technical skills but also their understanding of other areas of the business if they show an interest (sales, marketing, design, pricing etc.).

Who would benefit?

A knitted textile student or graduate with an understanding of how knitting machines work would be ideal. Experience with Dubied industrial knitting machines in particular is a definite bonus. An interest in or knowledge of fashion is not necessary, but a passion for knitting is.

Interns should be willing to perform a broad and varied ranges of tasks.
More important than the technical knowledge and skills they already possess is the eagerness to learn and expand on those skills during their time here.

There is the possibility down the line to increase hours and or take a formal job role if mutually agreeable.

Salary 
£7.00 per hour

2 days per week (16 hours) one of which can be a weekend day.

Grayson Perry: Provisional Punk – Turner Contemporary, Margate

This summer, Grayson Perry brings Provincial Punk to Turner Contemporary, Margate.

Perry is one of the most prominent and incisive commentators on contemporary society and culture. His uniquely subversive art combines autobiographical reference, from his childhood to alter-ago Claire, with wry social commentary on class, taste, consumerism, war, and art versus craft.
See more than 50 works in this focussed survey of Perry’s practice, only on show in Margate. From a young artist forging his own language in Thatcherite 1980s Britain to his work today, the exhibition explores the idea of ‘Provincial Punk’ as an anti-elitist and teasingly unfashionable spirit of creativity at the heart of his work.

See an extensive display of Perry’s hand-made ceramic pots covered in drawings, handwritten texts and collaged elements, from Perry’s earliest pieces made in the late 1980s to the present day. Described as ‘stealth bombs’, these visually seductive and decorative pots touch on themes such as religion, childhood trauma and environmental disaster.

Journey back to Perry’s early days in the post punk scene of 1980s London. See some of his earliest ceramics – a medium he embraced because of its ‘second class’ and uncool status, alongside previously unseen sketchbooks that mix confessional diary, sexual fantasy and political critique. Move through his rarely shown super-8 films, Bungalow Depression (created with Jennifer Binnie) and The Poor Girl, to more recent tapestries, such as The Walthamstow Tapestry and etchings, Map of an Englishman and Print for a Politician.

From provincial to popular, Perry guides us through his chronicles of modern life, and in post-election Britain, helps us assess culture, identity, class and the role of artist and craftsperson from then to now.

“I was a punk in the provincial sense. I was there in my bedroom with an old school shirt stencilling the word ‘hate’ onto it, looking out onto the lush turf of the north Essex countryside. Then, when I came to London, I was hanging out with people who were at the cutting edge of fashion – Body map, John Maybury, Cerith Wyn Evans, Steven Jones and Michael Clark were my part of my social circle at the time. And yet I was making pottery … with a Shetland woolly jumper view of the world and that was funny. 

The idea of ‘Provincial Punk’ is an oxymoron but it encapsulates creatively some sort of spirit in my work that still goes on to this day. It is a very creative force, a willingness to turn things over, to not accept the fashion and to have a bit of fun. It is a kind of teasing rebellion; it is not a violent revolution.”

From a basement in New York, Joseph Cornell channelled his limitless imagination into some of the most original art of the 20th century. Step into his beguiling world at this landmark exhibition.

Cornell hardly ventured beyond New York State, yet the notion of travel was central to his art. His imaginary voyages began as he searched Manhattan’s antique bookshops and dime stores, collecting a vast archive of paper ephemera and small objects to make his signature glass-fronted ‘shadow boxes’.

These miniature masterpieces transform everyday objects into spellbinding treasures. Together they reveal his fascination with subjects from astronomy and cinema to literature and ornithology and especially his love of European culture, from the Romantic ballet to Renaissance Italy.

Wanderlust brings together 80 of Cornell’s most remarkable boxes, assemblages, collages and films, some never before seen outside the USA. Entirely self-taught, the independence of Cornell’s creative voice won the admiration of artists from Marcel Duchamp and the Surrealists, to Robert Motherwell and the Abstract Expressionists, with echoes of his work felt in Pop and Minimalist art.

Wanderlust is a long overdue celebration of an incomparable artist, a man the New York Times called “a poet of light; an architect of memory-fractured rooms and a connoisseur of stars, celestial and otherwise.”

Print Design Assistant – The Role
Research, develop and interpret print trends and ideas in-line with the brand DNA. Ensuring we are constantly developing our print offer to meet our customer’s needs
Create original print designs using various hand painting and drawing techniques
Utilise CAD programmes to assist in preparing artworks for production, putting designs in repeats and placements
Generate CAD garment range boards in line with business requirements
Creating trend packs, mood and colour boards, re-colouring artworks
Support and work closely with the Design team on design administration tasks, ensuring successful results in all design aspects of the product journey

Print Design Assistant – The Candidate
You will be a talented Print Designer/Painter/Textile Artist/Illustrator with a feminine handwriting and a natural leaning towards floral design
A strong understanding of colour and able to demonstrate strong hand painting and drawing skills and technique with attention to detail
Good CAD skills in Adobe Photoshop essential and knowledge of Microsoft office programmes desirable (Powerpoint/Word/Office 365)
Understanding of creating repeat patterns and placements for garments
Garment & pattern cutting knowledge would be a great advantage
A good communicator in both written and verbal skills
Ability to be flexible and work with all members of the team on the creative journey, embracing the business core values
A professional, can-do attitude with a common sense approach to problem solving is essential
Good organisational and time management skills

Paid Textile Design Internship

Derek Rose Ltd are a luxury brand based on Baker Street, London specialising in nightwear, underwear and loungewear. All of our textiles are designed in-house including repeat print, jacquards and yarn dyed stripes and checks. This is an exciting opportunity for a Textiles graduate looking to gain industry experience.

You will be a part of a small team working directly with the internal designers contributing to the development of the SS17 collection and supporting the general running of the design office.

This internship is full time and will last six months to start end of July finishing end of January.

The ideal candidate:

  • Textiles (BA) hons degree
  • Interest and knowledge of designing prints and yarn dyed stripes and checks
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • Interest in textile design for both men’s and womenswear
  • Must be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • An excellent understanding of working in a fashion environment and of the design process
  • Be proactive and able to work independently on your own initiative

Duties to include:

  • Assisting the designers to design print, jacquards and yarn dyed stripes and checks
  • Creating design tech sheets
  • Using Adobe Creative Suite to bring concepts to design
  • Assisting with administrative tasks including archiving fabrics, filing, answering calls, maintaining showroom, updating design boards and other day to day tasks
  • Researching new trends, creating mood boards and colour research
  • Producing marketing materials using Adobe InDesign

Riviera Style brings together a diverse range of clothing worn in and by the sea. A key feature of the items selected is the importance of fabric, from early examples to produce the perfect fabric that didn’t bag or sag when wet, to more recent technical developments designed to improve fit and increase speed in the water.

Success for Printed Textiles Graduate Lucy Harris

Congratulations to recent Printed Textiles graduate, Lucy Harris for her new role as Print Design Trainee at McQ. Lucy is currently working on prints for both the Womenswear and Menswear RTW collections. Her role involves CAD design work, Colour ways, heat press and embroidery as well more administrative jobs.

Lucy’s final Womenswear Print collection inspired by raising awareness of conflict in Africa and the mis-use of their natural resources has won her much attention including a place as part of Texprint 2015 which she had to turn down for the role at Alexander McQueen.

Textiles Design Assistant for Childrenswear at Boden

Boden are looking for a full time Textiles Design Assistant in the Childrenswear department.

Main duties

We’re famous for our love of pattern and colour and we’re looking for an outstanding designer to join our in-house graphics team. This is an ideal opportunity for someone with a degree in fashion textiles, print or illustration – and one to two years’ industry experience in a similar role.

Fun logos are part of our Mini signature style, we’re looking for someone with excellent drawing skills and a good sense of colour who can design logos in a charming, engaging and innovative way. On the commercial side, you should have a good understanding of print and embroidery techniques and fabric types.

Skills & Experience

You’ll be competent in Illustrator, Photoshop and Microsoft Office. As well as being a good designer, you’ll also perform an important administrative role. We’re looking for an organisational whizz who can keep our files and logo boards in ship shape order. An excellent communicator, you’ll liaise with suppliers, comment on art work submissions and be able to complete 101 other tasks in the course of your duties.
