Christopher Raeburn is one of the most exciting emerging fashion brands in the UK. Over the last four years the brand has developed a unique and innovative approach to design applied to menswear, womenswear, and accessories. The business currently produces four collections a year two men’s and two women’s along with complementary men’s and women’s accessories.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
• Aiding the production team through out the production of both menswear and womenswear collections.
• Helping prepare for production with stock checks and managing trims.
• Resourcing fabrics and trims for production (this can apply especially to the ex military fabrics)
• Work along side Pattern Cutter on pattern amends in preparation for cutting.
• Help with organising in house production, cutting, collating trims, finishes.
• Be actively involved in the QC stage, inc factory visits – needs to have a keen eye for detail.
• Aid with packing and shipping – keeping the studio space organised in this busy stage of production.

SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Technical understanding of fabric and garment construction.
• Pattern cutting skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Keen eye for detail and understanding of high quality.

Alexander Calder: Performing Sculpture at Tate Modern

American sculptor Alexander Calder was a radical figure who pioneered kinetic sculpture, bringing movement to static objects.

Calder travelled to Paris in the 1920s, having originally trained as an engineer, and by 1931 he had invented the mobile, a term coined by Duchamp to describe Calder’s sculptures which moved of their own accord.

His dynamic works brought to life the avant-garde’s fascination with movement, and brought sculpture into the fourth dimension.

Continuing Tate Modern’s acclaimed reassessments of key figures in modernism, Alexander Calder: Performing Sculpture will reveal how motion, performance and theatricality underpinned his practice. It will bring together major works from museums around the world, as well as showcasing his collaborative projects in the fields of film, theatre, music and dance.

Year 1 Drawing Workshops

During a series of drawing workshops over the past few weeks, first year students practiced drawing textures, forms and lines for fashion and textiles. Models were styled with a multitude of fabrics and accessories presenting various patterns, shapes and textures in order to inspire a wide use of drawing media and colour.

Phase Eight: Print Design Intern (starting July 2016)

London based label Phase Eight are looking for a full time Print Design Intern to start in July 2016.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Design team and Print Designer.

The Main duties and responsibilities will include:

-Researching fashion and print trends through Magazines, WGSN, blogs, websites and regular London shop research.
-Chasing samples and liaising with overseas and UK suppliers.
-Organisation of the Design Department, filing, copying and general admin tasks.
-Re-working Design specs, attending garment fit meetings, photographing and logging samples.
-Help with the creation of mood boards and theme presentations.
-Creation of hand painted and digital prints.
-Re-colouring prints in Photoshop. Reworking layouts and putting designs into repeat.
-Designing or reworking embroidery and print layouts onto a garment spec.

Person Specification:

-Strong Photoshop and Illustrator skills are essential.
-Excellent communication skills.
-Studying for a Printed Textile Design Degree or Fashion with Print.
-Competent in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
-We are looking for someone reliable, helpful and above all enthusiastic.
-A motivated individual with an ambition to develop a career in Print or Fashion Design

WSA Woven Textiles goes to ‘Making it in Textiles’ 2015

Three final year Woven Textiles students, Leah Ashton, Hannah Mueller and Barbara Ahenkorah travelled to Bradford with tutor Jane Landau last week to take part in ‘Making it in Textiles’.

The Campaign for Wool, The Clothworkers’ Company, The Drapers’ Company and The Weavers’ Company have collaborated for a second year to provide a free, two-day conference in Bradford for final-year textile degree students, to forge stronger links between educational institutions and the UK textile manufacturing industry.

“We believe that textile students need more practical guidance about how the industry works. The conference will allow industry experts to provide insight into different roles within the industry, and to set out the requirements for employment after graduation. Students will also gain practical knowledge of a working mill through local mill trips.”

Woven Textiles student Leah Ashton tells us about her summer internships

Final year Woven Textiles student, Leah Ashton, spent her summer at two exciting internships one with Anna Champeney in Northern Spain and the other with Christopher Farr Cloth in London. She tells us about her very different experiences at both learning about their design process and how each company is run.

Anna Champeney Textile Studio

“In June this summer I spent three weeks at Anna Champeney Textile Studio, learning about local weaving techniques and natural dyeing. AC Textiles is an independent studio based in the remote village of Cristosende, Northern Spain. I applied for the internship because I wanted to gain even more weaving experience; this internship allowed me to weave myself, which very few others gave me the opportunity to do.

During my internship I wove a linen scarf which was sold online as part of AC Textiles summer collection as well as some linen towels for a customer commission. I also learnt some techniques for dyeing using plants and other natural sources, many of which were grown locally on site; I found this a very interesting experience.

It was such a great opportunity to travel to Northern Spain and be able to weave with a freelance designer. Not only because of the textile knowledge that I gained but also because I got to learn about the culture of a remote Spanish village and how a designer markets herself in such an area.”

Christopher Farr Cloth

“My next internship was at Christopher Farr Cloth in Chelsea, London. I was there from the beginning of July to the end of August. Christopher Farr cloth is the fabric division of Christopher Farr (Rugs). Their collection has over 60 designs of prints and weaves, designed by a range of designers and artists. The printed collection is still produced in the UK, and I was lucky enough to visit the family-owned company and see how the designs were printed; both by hand and using a rotary.

My main role consisted of dealing with sample requests, whether that was sending sample refreshers to the showrooms abroad or to independent interiors designers. During my internship they were developing a new printed outdoor fabric line, I got to sit in on meetings with the international printers and work on colour ways for the new prints. Recently, Christopher Farr have brought out a new wallpaper collection. Each wallpaper comes in an assortment of colours and I helped to create a wallpaper colour collection book that allows clients to pick designs and colour ways.”

Knitwear Internship at Julien Macdonald

Julien Macdonald is a luxury women’s fashion brand famous for its red carpet dressing.

We are currently looking to fill knit internship positions for the S/S 16 show in February. We are looking for students with excellent knitting skills. You should have previous experience using domestic knitting machines; fully fashioning garments and be very competent and confident with a wide variety of stitches.
