Featuring the work of Printed Textile student Alex Poyner

Final year Printed Textile student Alex Poyner introduces us to part of her collection.

For my final collection I initially looked at the different objects we carry and how these things help define us. This lead me to investigate the psychology behind collecting and hoarding; how some see litter where hoarders see treasure. I attempted to portray the clutter and order associated with hoarders and collectors through my designs, considering the placement of imagery and combining unrelated everyday objects. Artists Gavin Turk and Jason Taylor have been significant influences owing to the way they interpret everyday objects; either making them humorous or more thought provoking by taking a piece of litter and isolating it on a plinth.

I take an experimental approach to my work, always looking for new and exciting ways of creating. I enjoy the challenge of taking an object that others’ class as litter i.e. the plastic bag and making it aesthetically pleasing, intriguing and adding value to something which previously had no value. Working across medias and integrating them into printed textiles to create depth and excitement is an integral part of my work. I hope by focusing on everyday objects I have created prints that can relate to everyone.

Alex has already had her work showcased at the British Fashion Council portfolio day and there will be plenty more opportunities to see her finished collection at our upcoming graduate events.

Featuring the work of Woven Textiles student Becky Emery

Final year Woven Textiles student Becky Emery shares some of work with us. Her graduate collection explores human impact on the environment and the ecosystem. Her research focuses on the great pacific garbage patch and deforestation of Indonesian rainforest for palm oil plantations – both have an affect on the environment and endanger species.

Becky is currently creating a woven fabrics and trimmings collection for the interiors market with the aim to raise awareness on the issues, as well as setting an example by recycling materials such as ropes and plastic bags within the collection.

We look forward to seeing the complete collection in just a few weeks. Make sure to check out Becky’s work at our graduate events in London.

Studio Internships at Tata Naka

Luxury fashion brand Tata Naka are looking for interns to assist in their West London studio.

Description
We offer internships on an unpaid voluntary basis – or as a course requirement by your college. Normally our interns have to be over 18 and in tertiary education i.e. doing a degree course to qualify for work experience.

Interns will work on hand sewing, pattern drafting, garment construction, logistic and sales experience. They will get first hand experience of the inner workings of a design studio, working closely with the designers and core team through to Fashion week.

Our office hours are 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday.

Profile
We are a small but perfectly formed high end fashion label based in West London! We show at LFW twice a year and produce six collections per annum so there is always something to help with and to get involved with.

We are looking for hard working interns who like to get stuck in and learn all about how a small business works.

Specific Needs
Ideally fashion students only as interns will need to be able to handle a variety of tasks including hand sewing, pattern drafting and garment construction.

Texprint appoints Sarah Cheyne as Projects Coordinator

Printed Textile tutor Sarah Cheyne has recently been appointed Projects Coordinator by Texprint. Her role is to liaise with companies and Texprint designers to facilitate paid Internships.
TEXPRINT interviews, mentors and promotes the UK’s most talented textile design graduates with the support of industry professionals worldwide.
Those selected are introduced to buyers, press and sponsors at the Texprint London event, and at Europe and Asia’s leading yarn and textile exhibitions.
Texprint is entirely funded by the generous sponsorship of industry and by British charitable foundations, who believe wholeheartedly in supporting textile design talent and in encouraging design innovation and excellence.

Internships have become an integral part of developing a career in the textile sector, as in many industries. That’s why Texprint is putting increased emphasis on supporting its designers to undertake internships both in the UK and internationally. This has been facilitated by a new UK government funding programme known as the Employer Ownership Partnership for Skills pilot, announced in 2014. This is providing Texprint with funds to help support 20 work placements over two years.

Sarah Cheyne is an alumni of Texprint 1991 and has been a supporter for many years. She has been a member of the Texprint council since 2001 and is often involved in the selection process. More recently Sarah has offered individual consultations with Texprint designers in her role as Hero Mentor.
